Stuff Journalists Like – #123 PR Reps

I heart PR photo

If
there is one thing journalists are adamant about is their love for PR reps.

You
know –the handlers of government officials, business leaders, movie stars and
anyone with a Twitter account with more than 10,000 followers.

PR
reps are always available to journalists, return calls in a timely matter and
never spin a bad story. “I wouldn’t say 100 people died in the factory
explosion. I would say 200 people survived.” Journalists like when PR flacks
say, “I wouldn’t put it like that.” That helps the journalist write the story
that makes everyone happy.

One
of the things journalists like best about PR reps is when one tells a
journalist how to do his or her job. For any PR folks out there that want to
build a better relationship with their local journalist, recommend to a
journalist how to write a story, who to talk to and especially what to leave
out of a story.

Journalists
appreciate when PR representatives control an event or story, it leaves less
thinking and doing on the part of the journalist. They especially appreciate
when a PR rep chaperons a journalist during an event, even holding the
journalist’s hand.

And
it’s not that PR people hide bad or embarrassing stories; they’re just watching
out for the journalists. They know journalists are busy with stories on bake
sales and cat fashion shows and they don’t want to create anymore work for
their hard-working journos.

And
journalists are in no way envious or jealous of their PR counterparts; not the
money, the 9-to-5, no-weekends schedule or hell, even the health insurance.
Nope, journalists know that PR reps are grateful for those things that
journalists don’t have.

And
despite what you might have heard, journalist never ever ever speak
ill of PR folks behind their backs. Journalist never use insulting names like
flack or asshole or the “the one person who makes my life horrible.”
Journalists simply just don’t do that.

Another
thing journalists like about PR reps is, oh hell . . . HAPPY APRIL’S FOOLS
DAY!

Hahaha. As long as you’re not writing about anything remotely negative or controversial, PR peeps are OK. They actually usually get back to me at least, unlike some sources… who might consider responding if they’re bored at work and happen to remember you called.

  2. stephanie says:

Oh, this is hilarious…. I love it… at first I was thinking, “What? Are you kidding me.. I have to write a comment to you about what it really is like working with them…” LOL

  3. Catherine says:

HA. I figured this had to be an April Fool’s joke with the first sentence -or perhaps the photo was a tip-off. Thanks for the smile.

  4. AntoineDoyen says:

Hek! It’s a good think you revealed it was April’s fool cos’, well… in some case, it happens to be particularly true.
