Stuff Journalists Like – #62 Using Their Job to Score (The Skirt Versions)

There were a few complaints that the
SJL post #62
Using their job to score
was a tad sexist since it was written from a guy’s
point of view (sorry, it’s the only one we got over here). So to prove SJL is
not sexist, we solicited posts about
chick female journalists using their job
to score. So there! Enjoy.

Female reporter
It's not just male journalists who like to use their careers as
date-bait. Sometimes lady journalists reach a stage where they realize they don't want to
tell family and friends about meeting their cute videographer boyfriend at a
murder scene when they pointed out a better angle to see the victim.

So female journalists need to find someone out of the newsroom.
Perhaps a cute firefighter at the latest fire. Female journalists too can use their job as a source of dates. "You're on the radio?" or
"You're on TV?" are two familiar statements to the
journalist-on-the-prowl.  The low-level fame that comes with the job
impresses would-be dates, who actually believe being a journalist is a
cool job. (And don't get it wrong, most days it is.)

The lack of decent wages is definitely a downfall
in a relationship. However, journalists do have one great skill – listening. Journalists are used to asking questions.  So, as female journalists make conversations
with the romantic interest for the night , they're usually the one's leaning in and asking them
about their lives. Most people love talking about themselves, which gives lady journalists the upper hand out on the dating field.

Flirty If
you’re out to dinner with a girl who has the same favorite author as you do,
quotes all your favorite movies and listens to your favorite bands, she might
be your soulmate. Or she might be a female journalist.

The
fact is, when you combine the fairer sex with journalism, you get the perfect
storm of skills designed to deduce exactly what will get a fellow to ask for
her number. Namely: Research skills.

There’s
no shame in dropping your date's name in a Google search before actually
spending any time with them. It’s following a line of investigation. And who
likes investigating more than anyone else? Journalists. And who likes
researching every single published thing available on the Internet about their
potential date? Female journalists.

Lady
journalists are bred to track down crucial info – and that instinct doesn't
stop at our personal lives.

We
can get the stats behind the latest market crash in minutes. The minutes from
the latest Senate meeting in a snap. And we can find out that guy from
accounting’s top five favorite movies faster than you can say, “Facebook
stalking.” Er… “researching.”

Within
minutes of the first date, a female journalist can have her beau’s tongue
wagging at her apparent intuition at exactly what will get him fired up. And
when you’re making under 30K a year, a free dinner is definitely worth a
Twitter search.

It’s
not being creepy. It’s being professional.

I don’t even know what to say about Justine’s post, except that I seem to be blushing at having figured out the name, age, education, workplace and position of the random hot guy I spoke to for a few minutes last Saturday. *ahem* I’d like to think it’s making me a better journalist.

  3. Went on a date last week, and when he found out I was a reporter he was wayyy interested in what I do. Later, he said it was cool because it meant there was a chance I was a superhero. Whatever gets their attention, I guess.
