Stuff Journalists Like – #46 Sarcasm

Photo All journalists are at the very least bilingual.

In addition to their first language, journalists are fluent in sarcasm.

Next to cursing, sarcasm may be the most essential verbal tool for journalists to communicate in the modern newsroom.

Sarcasm is very important for a journalist’s survival. The old motto, “never trust a journalist that isn’t sarcastic” has never been more true than today. Be it referencing stressful deadlines, cantankerous sources or the lack of doughnuts in the newsroom, all journalists have perfected the art of sarcasm.

A journalist’s sarcasm can come across in a number of ways from: “Oh yes, this is exactly why I went to college for four years and accumulated all those student loans so I can cover the county fair bake sale,” to “Well, at least Wal-Mart is always hiring.”

Some might think sarcasm is a defense mechanism for jaded journalists coping with a changing industry that is leaving many without a job, or perhaps worse, no time to actually report the news.

But that’s just plain wrong.

Sarcasm is how journalists express themselves. Without sarcasm, a journalist would simply be left to express raw emotion, which would be about as pleasant as having a conversation with a blogger.
